Let's stop teenage drivers dying

It took the death of a friend's son to prompt our website member Caroline Cardew-Smith to post a passionate call for action on our forum.
It was yet another tragedy of a young, inexperienced driver speeding. 'From insurance statistics we know it is this group that needs protecting most, for their own and others' safety,' says Cardew-Smith.
She's now launching a campaign to tackle the problem: SKID - Save Kids and Inexperienced Drivers - aims to kick start the debate and get laws changed in line with most other countries.
She proposes that young and inexperienced drivers:
- Must have driven a minimum of 50 logged hours before taking their test.
- Must have driven for a minimum of six months before taking their test.
- Must drive on provisional plates for one year after their test.
- Are allowed no passengers under 25, and mustn't drive after midnight for six months after their test.
- Are forbidden from driving any car with an engine bigger than 1.2 until they are 21.
- Are restricted to a zero alcohol limit when driving.
Her MP in Epsom and Ewell, shadow roads minister Chris Grayling, is soon to launch a report on the issue. He is seeking to see implemented insurance industry recommendations which demand a fixed period of training prior to a test, and limits on the power of a newly qualified driver's vehicle.
